Italian Election

Five Star movement surge, Italy's Establishment in political deadlock

The 5 Star Movement is confirmed as the first party in Italy, with even more consensus than expected.

The centre-right coalition gathers most of the votes, but not enough to reach the majority. In this case, the plot twist is related to the overtaking of the League compared to Forza Italia, so to see Antonio Tajani as prime minister has become highly unlikely. Since no coalition has reached the majority in the House and the Senate, it is up to the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to form a new government, after having listened to all the parties involved.
