MELANI – Reporting and Analysis Centre for Information Assurance

Virus, worms, Trojan horses, spyware, etc. – almost all computer users are now exposed to risks from malware. MELANI, Reporting and Analysis Centre for Information Assurance, informs you of dangers and preventive measures. www.melani.admin.ch.

Preserve the confidentiality of your data when using open-access internet connections

Take precautions when using a shared or open-access computer (internet café, hotel lobby, etc.). Always log out of your session using the buttons or hyperlinks offered and close the browser. We also advise you to clear your browser history and cache and delete temporary files.

Also be cautious when using wifi hotspot (airport, hotels, restaurants, etc.). Use a firewall and log in to your online services using secure protocols such as SSL (HTTPS).

Protect yourself against phishing emails

Have you ever received emails in which the sender claims to be a bank, for example, and asks you to send your log-in details or click a link to another website asking you to enter your log-in details? If so, you have already experienced what is called "phishing". The term is a contraction of the words "phreaking" (telephone hacking) and "fishing". These emails are often routed so as to appear to have been sent by your bank or another organisation (online service provider, government agency, etc.). How can you protect yourself? Swissquote Bank Ltd, like any other reputable banking establishment, will never ask you to communicate your personal log-in information or password by email.

You will be informed of any major changes by letter or telephone. Delete the email immediately and above all do not open any attachments.

Ensure you are using the latest version of your browser. Most browsers have built-in protection against phishing and notify you if you open a fraudulent website.

Never communicate your log-in details to third parties! Swissquote will never ask you for sensitive information such as passwords or personal information by email.

Strengthen the security of your password

The password you choose is the first line of defence against unauthorised access to your online services. To preserve the quality and reliability of your password, please respect the following points:

  • Do not use personal information which could be easy to guess (name, date of birth, telephone number, etc.).
  • Do not use dictionary words.
  • Do not use the same password for different websites or applications.
  • Regularly change your password
  • Most importantly, don't tell anyone your password!
  • Do not note down your password and do not store it unencrypted on your computer.

Your password must be at least 8 characters, composed of upper case letters, lower case letters and numbers. You can use a password management application to securely generate passwords which will be composed of several dozens of characters without having to remember them. This will allow you to generate different secure passwords for each service requiring authentication.

Secure your internet connection using a firewall

A firewall is an application which protects your computer against intrusions from a third-party network, such as the internet. It monitors traffic, filtering data flows which pass between your computer and the networks. Therefore only authorised communications can cross the firewall and enter your computer, all others being automatically blocked.

Use anti-malware software

Anti-malware software protects you against spyware and other undesirable software which could reduce the performance of your computer and compromise confidential data. Having regularly updated anti-malware software is therefore vital to preserving your system's performance and longevity, as well as keeping your data away from prying eyes.
